Spring Refresh

Since winter seems to be a no-show this year and Easter is right around the corner, I decided it was time for a "refresh"... what the interior decorating crowd calls a seasonal or periodic change to ones decor.

 

I framed a map that Joerg and I found two summers ago at a local market.  It's a map of Yellowstone that was created by German scientists so while the location names are in English, the map text is in German.

While Jörg was out of town, I was finally able to use the printer to print photos and prints which I could frame for our shelves.

And, after two years hidden away in a storage box, the komodo dragon we brought back from Indonesia is finally back on display. 

And a few spring flowers for the island.

I'm still working on the kitchen shelves, but I made a start.

This vase is carved out of waste wood from a Russian Olive tree.  Russian Olive grows wild and aggressively around here.

Weekend Visit

We had a bit of a snowstorm on Thursday so I didn't journey out to Absarokee and instead stayed home to work on other things.  What I was really holding out for was a drive to the house with Jörg so we could discuss paint colors.  I have included a sneak peek below.  It was a beautiful sunny day so the snow was melting off the roof and dripping everywhere.  Normally I would say it was a beautiful sound, a harbinger of spring and warming weather.  However, living in Montana, this is just one of several such sunny drippy days and we could still have snow again before summer is officially here.  Anyway, the painter has begun the work of covering things that don't get painted (like the beams) and taping the windows.  He plans to start priming walls this week. White Walls

The snow is melting quickly now that the temperatures have hit the 50s (and low 60s today).  Yesterday I went to Absarokee to work on staining the posts and beams for the porches.  This is a continuation of work I did with Dad a few weeks ago but this delivery of beams was more than double that first batch.  I worked all day and didn't quite get to the halfway mark. I did, however, get a few pictures. And today, I went back to keep going but this time I brought help! This will be my project room. The office Setting up the beams for staining. Three beams from the last batch get a second coat then it's on to the new stuff. 20 beams A little snack break in the back of my car. By 5:15 I was out of energy and space.  These last three beams were too close together to prepare them for stain. Since I didn't finish on Thursday, I returned today and brought reinforcement.   Not a bad place to work...if you must work. :)

A relaxed day

Friday was relaxed and full of laughter, stories, and conversation.  In the afternoon, my cousin Denise came over and we had a lovely time of catching up.  The last time we saw each other was 25 years ago at her wedding.  So much has happened since then! In the evening, we went to a local ministry where they give a gospel concert (and if you know the words, it's also a sing-along).  It was a relaxed evening of old time gospel music which is broadcast on local access television and the radio.
