Nothing exciting, but still progress

Today was a beautiful day for a drive to Absarokee.  We are getting eager for completion so the progress feels slow but there is progress nonetheless.

The painter has most of the space primed and is currently painting trim and doors.  He may get the garage finished before the weekend.

The tiler has the master shower floor in (cement) and the drain set, as well as all the walls finished with cement board (drywall for wet spaces). 

The builder has put in more posts and beams, and is completing the gable over the front door.  They also gave the last batch of beams a first coat of stain.

Meanwhile, the cabinet pulls and knobs are coming in, the appliances are in and sitting at the warehouse, and we are ready to order chandeliers and wall sconces, and the drop-in vanities for the guest bathrooms.

A Little Catching Up

It has been reasonably quiet around here lately; well, quiet in terms of nothing interesting to report.  So, here is a little update on the not-worth-a-whole-post happenings. December 31st; I came home from running errands to find a herd of deer relaxing in our "yard".  About six of them got up and moved away but these two were pretty committed to staying put just outside our door. January 5th; We got a good Montana snow!  Montana has a completely different attitude toward snow from what we were used to in Vermont.  In Vermont, the municipalities would run the snow plows until there was no snow left on the road and many towns would haul snow away to clear parking areas. In Montana, it is assumed that you drive a suitable vehicle for the environment and have the sense to put on good snow tires.  Chains are an option here as well as studded tires.  Meanwhile, it's every driver for themselves.  The state will make sure that at least one lane (each directi...

Weekend Visit

We had a bit of a snowstorm on Thursday so I didn't journey out to Absarokee and instead stayed home to work on other things.  What I was really holding out for was a drive to the house with Jörg so we could discuss paint colors.  I have included a sneak peek below.  It was a beautiful sunny day so the snow was melting off the roof and dripping everywhere.  Normally I would say it was a beautiful sound, a harbinger of spring and warming weather.  However, living in Montana, this is just one of several such sunny drippy days and we could still have snow again before summer is officially here.  Anyway, the painter has begun the work of covering things that don't get painted (like the beams) and taping the windows.  He plans to start priming walls this week. Squall Season

It seems that we have entered the season of squalls here in Montana.  A squall is a sudden, localized, and short-lived storm which often brings rain or snow.  The squalls here are most often...snow. Today, we had just such a squall.  It last for about three minutes and resulted in little more than wet patio cement.  And just as quickly as it arrived, the clouds moved on revealing a blue sky and just a hint of sun.
