Cold drinks are in our future

I went to the house today to meet the appliance delivery. While I was there I took some pictures of the results of our long weekend of labor. The bonus room in the garage is full and the garage is pretty crowded as well. Mixed in with our own stuff is the floor trim, painted and ready for installation, and the plumbing fixtures, recently delivered by the plumber.

Inside the house, the flooring guys are installing the wood floor.

And outside the house the excavator has trenched from the well to the house and installed our lawn hydrant. In remote areas like this, homeowners are often required to put in a lawn hydrant with a garden hose in case there's a need for fire suppression until the fire department arrives. 😟 He has also dug some test holes for the septic drain field, and started digging for the geothermal piping.

By the time I was done taking my pictures and wondering around the house, the appliances arrived. That means we have a refrigerator which means cold drinks are coming!



 




Those mounds are test holes to find the best place for the septic drain field.

Weekend Visit

We had a bit of a snowstorm on Thursday so I didn't journey out to Absarokee and instead stayed home to work on other things.  What I was really holding out for was a drive to the house with Jörg so we could discuss paint colors.  I have included a sneak peek below.  It was a beautiful sunny day so the snow was melting off the roof and dripping everywhere.  Normally I would say it was a beautiful sound, a harbinger of spring and warming weather.  However, living in Montana, this is just one of several such sunny drippy days and we could still have snow again before summer is officially here.  Anyway, the painter has begun the work of covering things that don't get painted (like the beams) and taping the windows.  He plans to start priming walls this week. Wild Weather

In twenty-five years of living in Vermont, we saw some wild weather; big snows, ice storms, high winds, lots of rain...but I don't think we ever had so much rain fall from the sky at one time that the roads turned to rivers and the air turned to water.  It doesn't last long (the rain slowed down to a more civil "drizzle" in less than ten minutes) but it's pretty amazing to watch.  This raid took place on Monday (August 12th). When it rains like this, rocks and dirt get washed into the streets.  Within one or two days, the town sends out their street sweepers (the big machines that vacuum up debris and clean the roadways) to clean things up.  I have seen more sweeping action here in two months than I saw in twenty-five years in Vermont. A Little Catching Up

It has been reasonably quiet around here lately; well, quiet in terms of nothing interesting to report.  So, here is a little update on the not-worth-a-whole-post happenings. December 31st; I came home from running errands to find a herd of deer relaxing in our "yard".  About six of them got up and moved away but these two were pretty committed to staying put just outside our door. January 5th; We got a good Montana snow!  Montana has a completely different attitude toward snow from what we were used to in Vermont.  In Vermont, the municipalities would run the snow plows until there was no snow left on the road and many towns would haul snow away to clear parking areas. In Montana, it is assumed that you drive a suitable vehicle for the environment and have the sense to put on good snow tires.  Chains are an option here as well as studded tires.  Meanwhile, it's every driver for themselves.  The state will make sure that at least one lane (each directi...
