Busy Day

After a phone call with our Vermont realtor to get the morning started, Joerg went to his "day job" and I took off for Absarokee and Billings.  I took some pictures of the house, asked a couple of questions of my builder, and then double-checked the number of interior doors and which way they swing.  In Billings, I gave my little GPS a workout (I think it overheated from all the driving around so I had to switch to my phone for a while) as I drove from one end of town to the other placing orders, confirming colors, and gathering information.  It was a busy day, but I can work with busy when things are getting done.

Here are the latest pictures from the construction site.

The front patio cement has been poured.

The builder and his crew were up on the roof attaching the peak trusses.

I just took some weird angle images to play with the sunlight.  It was a gorgeous day.

The imprinted cement is subtle but looks so much better than plain poured cement.

The back patio cement is also finished.  Like the imprinted cement in front, the wood-like imprint of this cement is so fun, and such an improvement over plain cement.

I'm standing in the...well, I'm not exactly sure where I am.  I was really just taking a picture of angles and structures of house framing.

Sitting out on this covered porch will probably be one of my favorite places (during the summer).

A Little Catching Up

It has been reasonably quiet around here lately; well, quiet in terms of nothing interesting to report.  So, here is a little update on the not-worth-a-whole-post happenings. December 31st; I came home from running errands to find a herd of deer relaxing in our "yard".  About six of them got up and moved away but these two were pretty committed to staying put just outside our door. January 5th; We got a good Montana snow!  Montana has a completely different attitude toward snow from what we were used to in Vermont.  In Vermont, the municipalities would run the snow plows until there was no snow left on the road and many towns would haul snow away to clear parking areas. In Montana, it is assumed that you drive a suitable vehicle for the environment and have the sense to put on good snow tires.  Chains are an option here as well as studded tires.  Meanwhile, it's every driver for themselves.  The state will make sure that at least one lane (each directi...

Weekend Visit

We had a bit of a snowstorm on Thursday so I didn't journey out to Absarokee and instead stayed home to work on other things.  What I was really holding out for was a drive to the house with Jörg so we could discuss paint colors.  I have included a sneak peek below.  It was a beautiful sunny day so the snow was melting off the roof and dripping everywhere.  Normally I would say it was a beautiful sound, a harbinger of spring and warming weather.  However, living in Montana, this is just one of several such sunny drippy days and we could still have snow again before summer is officially here.  Anyway, the painter has begun the work of covering things that don't get painted (like the beams) and taping the windows.  He plans to start priming walls this week. Squall Season

It seems that we have entered the season of squalls here in Montana.  A squall is a sudden, localized, and short-lived storm which often brings rain or snow.  The squalls here are most often...snow. Today, we had just such a squall.  It last for about three minutes and resulted in little more than wet patio cement.  And just as quickly as it arrived, the clouds moved on revealing a blue sky and just a hint of sun.
