Winter is Coming

It is that time of year when the temperatures are dropping and we start to anticipate snow.  But before things get truly wintery, our excavator came back to run drain lines and do a little earth moving.  The drain lines were needed so our builder could come back and install the downspouts on the gutters.  Both of these things are now done so we are ready for snow...and the spring thaw.

Before Thanksgiving, Patrick flew in from Arizona to join us for an early celebration.  We enjoyed a great meal, some music, a few laughs, and then he returned to Tempe in order to work over the holiday.  Such is the life of a young first officer.  

While he was here, however, Joerg put him to work and they brought the motorcycles from the trailer into the garage.  NOW, this garage is looking like home.  And when we get some warmer days this winter, the bikes will be accessible for a little maintenance (since they have been in storage and unused for three seasons).



 And our Thanksgiving meal; the first celebration - hopefully, of many - in our new house.  (I forgot to take a picture of the dinner spread but I assure you, it was yummy.)

Weekend Visit

We had a bit of a snowstorm on Thursday so I didn't journey out to Absarokee and instead stayed home to work on other things.  What I was really holding out for was a drive to the house with Jörg so we could discuss paint colors.  I have included a sneak peek below.  It was a beautiful sunny day so the snow was melting off the roof and dripping everywhere.  Normally I would say it was a beautiful sound, a harbinger of spring and warming weather.  However, living in Montana, this is just one of several such sunny drippy days and we could still have snow again before summer is officially here.  Anyway, the painter has begun the work of covering things that don't get painted (like the beams) and taping the windows.  He plans to start priming walls this week. A Little Catching Up

It has been reasonably quiet around here lately; well, quiet in terms of nothing interesting to report.  So, here is a little update on the not-worth-a-whole-post happenings. December 31st; I came home from running errands to find a herd of deer relaxing in our "yard".  About six of them got up and moved away but these two were pretty committed to staying put just outside our door. January 5th; We got a good Montana snow!  Montana has a completely different attitude toward snow from what we were used to in Vermont.  In Vermont, the municipalities would run the snow plows until there was no snow left on the road and many towns would haul snow away to clear parking areas. In Montana, it is assumed that you drive a suitable vehicle for the environment and have the sense to put on good snow tires.  Chains are an option here as well as studded tires.  Meanwhile, it's every driver for themselves.  The state will make sure that at least one lane (each directi...

Counting Down the Days

My trip to the house was quiet.  Except for the excavator putting in the last loop of geothermal tubing, I was the only one there.  My first mission on this day was to put a first layer of clear coat on the mantle (so that it's smooth and dust-able).   With that done, I could wander around and see what happened on Monday.  A small wall, overlooked on the house plan, has been installed and will hopefully get primer and paint this weekend. Interior doors are starting to go in. And here's the master bed WITH mattresses.  Now all we need is the bedding (and toilets, sinks, and showers) The excavator is bedding down the last loop of geothermal tubes. It looks stormy so it's a good time to head back to Livingston.
